Turning promises into progress

This year, International Women's Day highlighted the importance of economic empowerment.

It’s a theme that resonates strongly for many women in Australia today, in the face of ongoing cost-of-living pressures, a gender pay gap that remains alive and well, and lower super balances on retirement than men.

With that in mind, we asked some of our senior leaders for their thoughts and tips on super and finances, and what they’ve been able to do to progress their own financial empowerment and wellbeing. Below you'll find their responses, and the steps you can take to boost your long-term super balance and broader finances.

Anna Papile

Chief Operations Officer

"We all have an opportunity to shape the future in some way, including through our interactions and support of others. At Catholic Super, we’re committed to supporting all members and being there for them (and their families) when they need us most.   At these moments, our dedicated staff are trained and available to handle enquiries where additional support is needed”

Carrie Norman

Carrie Norman

Chief Experience Officer

"Australian women may retire with $136,000 less in superannuation than men^ – it’s a statistic we see often, and closing the gap will take a co-ordinated, sustained effort. Super is an investment in your retirement, gaining knowledge by attending webinars and seminars can help you make sure your superannuation will set you up for the retirement you deserve."

Amanda Veldman

Chief People Officer

"It’s important to celebrate gender equality not only on International Women’s Day but throughout the year if we want to accelerate change. We’re committed to supporting gender inclusivity, whether that’s supporting our people to shape a work-life that suits them, or through leading by example with a 50/50 gender split on our executive leadership team."

Jessie Pettigrew

Head of Responsible Investment

“As an investment team, our advocacy for better gender representation is related to company performance. Research continues to show that companies with more diverse executive teams are materially more likely to outperform. From an investment perspective, it’s a stubbornly persistent issue, and better addressing this has the potential to add material investment returns.”

Caroline Melocco

Relationship Manager

"For a lot of women, superannuation will be the greatest asset you will ever have in your own name, so it’s important to really understand and engage with it. Choosing appropriate investment options for your super can make a significant difference to your future balance. Retirement can feel a long way off, but super is your money, and financial independence is the key to true empowerment."

Natalie Alford

Chief Risk Officer

"Creating an inclusive workplace means actively leading and empowering our people to create and support a culture where everyone feels valued and supported to speak up and share different perspectives in how we deliver for our members and employers.  For me, marching forward means a more equitable world for everyone so we can all reach our full potential."
